Happy Birthday to My Son, the Boy Gourmet
My eldest geekling, Jason, turned three years old last week! To celebrate his encroaching manhood, he put on his favorite pink apron and made cupcakes with his mother and sister. (Hey, don't judge! Wolfgang Puck earned $16 million last year, so I'll let little J bake all the cupcakes he wants.)I may have mentioned this before, but little J has Celiac Disease and is on a very strict diet. He very rarely gets to enjoy any kind of baked goods, as most contain wheat, barley and/or rye. Luckily, we found the Girl Gourmet Cupcake Maker just in time for his birthday. This was a fun way for the kids to make and decorate cupcakes. Better yet... all the ingredients are wheat and gluten free!
Mind you, the Cupcake Maker is intended for ages eight and up, so ours didn't turn out quite as photogenic as they would if older children were at the helm. Still, we had a lot of fun and -- most importantly -- Jason was finally able to enjoy some delicious sweets on his birthday!
I highly recommend the Girl Gourmet Cupcake Maker to all parents. Each cupcake is easily "baked" in the microwave for 30 seconds and then you use the fun froster to spin and decorate the cupcake. It was also really easy to clean... and I had two preschoolers going nuts with it.
For parents of little celiacs, this is such a rare find! Here are some pics of our birthday cupcake-athon:

Each kit comes with four different flavors of cupcake mix: vanilla, cinnamon sugar, chocolate and red velvet. There are also four different frosting flavors and a cute little jar of sprinkles!

Licking the batter off the spatula is the best part!

Okay, so we didn't quite perfect the frosting swirl, but I think my geeklings did a fine job. Next, we need to geekify our dessert more, like these Super Mario cupcakes and these Pac-Man cupcakes!

Pink? Why couldn't it be yellow, orange or even a light red but no it's pink. Oh well it makes a good cup cake.

You should write to Hasbro and tell them to put out a G.I. Joe version!

I totally agree. I have FOUR boys and they all LOVE the kitchen. when i saw this product, I said to my husband, we're getting that. my boys all had comments about it stating 'girl' and they only showed girls on the commercial.
I WILL DEFINITELY BUY THIS ITEM.

And to top it off...you can humiliate him as a teen with the photos!
Wow...three! Three seemed big to me with my oldest. Do you feel like the years are flying by too fast too?

Yes, especially since Lois is almost eye level with him!

Too cute! It's amazing how many kids have food sensitivities these days. When we were little you didn't hear about it at all. Every one of my kids has food allergies and one also has stomach problems that require a special diet. I'm glad you found something that they can both enjoy!

My kids struggle with all sorts of food issues and these wouldn't work because of the dye but that is so cool. Glad you found something that does--and why do they always make baking things PINK! All three of mine LOVE to bake and this is just silly.

The only mix in this toy that has dye is the Red Velvet Cake (FD&C Red 40). The Yellow Cake mix uses carrot extract, and the Strawberry Frosting uses beet powder for the pink color.

OH MY GOODNESS! I have a three year old daughter who has celiac disease, too, and she has a baking CRAZY nine year old sister, who I think will be getting this for CERTAIN for Christmas. Wild!
(and Heather Young sent me over. Thanks, Heather!)

You know, those still look tasty. I'd eat one!

We are a gluten-free family. Birthdays haven't always been exciting because they feel that their cakes are too "different."
We're working on it. I'm getting better. I wish I had known about that kit when my kids were younger. They might still like to get it -- anything in a package that is GF is "cool" to them.
Glad I found your blog.

Please note that not only are the cake mixes gluten-free, but that the frosting mixes in this toy are also gluten-free.
Importantly, note that the company’s other item, the Girl Gourmet Ice Cream Sandwich Maker, is NOT gluten-free.
Their early packaging runs appear a bit confusing. Check their website http://www.mygirlgourmet.com, for updated information.
By the way, this toy is made by Jakks Pacific, Inc., not Hasbro.

When people with celiac disease eat foods or use products containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging or destroying villi—the tiny, fingerlike protrusions lining the small intestine. Villi normally allow nutrients from food to be absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream. Without healthy villi, a person becomes malnourished, no matter how much food one eats. Happy Birthday to your Son!
