Barbie Black Canary, My "Filthy" Birthday Present

Have any of you been paying attention to the recent headlines regarding the new Barbie Black Canary doll? Apparently, a religious group in England has decided that it is a children's toy that promotes sado-masochism or some such nonsense. Here is a pic of the doll in question:

Meh, looks like Dinah Lance with a Barbie face. Christian Voice, a fundamentalist group with their minds in the gutter, has this to say about the new Black Canary doll:
Barbie has always been on the tarty side and this is taking it too far. A children’s doll in sexually suggestive clothing is irresponsible — it’s filth.
Wow, they might have a valid point if the doll were actually designed and marketed for nine-year-old girls. It's not. It's a collectible figure for comic geeks and you probably won't even see it in toy stores! Even the morons at Fox News reporting on this story refers to it as "Barbie's new S&M look" that Mattel "claims" is based on a character of the same name.

IDIOTS! What do they mean by "claims" to be based on a character, as if Mattel is lying? Hello?! She's been around for sixty freaking years! In fact, here is a picture of Black Canary from 1948 in what was an even more suggestive costume. Just look at that bustier compared to the pic above!

Hee hee. I had resisted the temptation of pre-ordering the doll until now because I'm just not into Barbie products. Heck, I didn't even buy the Mulder and Scully Barbies. I mean, it's cool that they made them and all, but their faces always still look like a Barbie or Ken. Lame.

Nevertheless, as an early birthday present to myself (turning 29 on Friday), I went ahead and pre-ordered the S&M Barbie... just in case Mattel catches too much heat and ends up pulling them off shelves.

Oh, and speaking of DC birthday gifts, my saint of a mother-in-law just bought Jason an early third birthday present. Fisher-Price has made an awesome Batcave playset. She bought him that, plus all the awesome "sold separately" villains and vehicles. Grandma rocks!

The Black Canary doll is just the latest not-marketed-to-kids doll that some groups have their knickers in a twist over.

Several years ago it was the gay Billy doll; they're collectors' items now. Earlier this year someone made me an offer for my Billy and Carlos dolls, but if I sold them my RuPaul doll would be lonely.

    Happy Birthday for Friday!

I have some Barbies... but they're not as fun as the one you ordered, they're just regular run-of-the-mill 'special edition' ones that my mum buys me each year.

Ah, Christian Voice. A group that has bullied Cancer charities into refusing donations, been asked to take their business elsewhere by one of the UK's leading banks and are currently trying to wriggle out of paying their court costs after losing a court case against the BBC.

They really are a poisonous bunch.

Oh my, I had no idea! This is probably the first time we've even heard of Christian Voice here in the states. Well, I hope they go bankrupt.

OMG! This whole post made me want to laugh, and cry. I love the way FOX news implied it was made up.

And hooray for Batman! I think those look like they are from the new DC Superfriends set if I'm correct...we need to get those. Sophie loooves her some Batman (that's my girl). She wants to be Batman (mind you, not BatGIRL...but MAN) for Halloween (with her little sis as Catwoman of course), and she wants a Batman party too. I'll have to catch her on video one of these days talking about her beloved Justice League for Geek of the Week.

Happy birthday to you and little J!

You'll need to get Master Jason a giant penny and a dinosaur for that Batcave, just to make everything, you know, just so.
