Speed Racer: The Next Generation DVD Giveaway!
Yes, we are holding another contest on Geek Parenting! Read on for details…
In case you've been living under a rock, Speed Racer is back. Not only are The Wachowski Brothers about to release a live-action movie based on the classic show, Nicktoons has a new series on the horizon called Speed Racer: The Next Generation.
I just had the pleasure of watching the animated film that kicks off the new cartoon series. Speed Racer: The Next Generation is a blast and should please both old school and new fans. It manages to update the appeal of the show while still paying homage to the original (starting with a punk rock cover of the famous theme song).
This series is compelling to me because it's a continuation of the Speed Racer story, not a spin-off or remake. In true Speed Racer style, there are dramatic reveals and unfolding story arcs, so I don't want to give away too much information. I will say that it involves young students at an elite "Racing Academy."
In fact, you quickly learn that a Headmaster Spritle runs this Racing Academy! Yes, it is the same Spritle who was always hiding in his brother Speed's trunk. The grown Spritle is actually voiced by Peter Fernandez, who wrote the lyrics to the enduring theme song and dubbed the original Speed Racer for American audiences. Another facet of the original Speed Racer that we all love is, of course, the racing! This movie doesn't disappoint here, either. Not only is the direction tight during these scenes, the movie introduces the idea of "virtual racing." Hey, we're living in the future, right? Of course there is going to be holograms and cars with the artificial intelligence of great white sharks! (Er, it makes sense in the context of the movie, I swear.)
Suffice it to say, I really enjoyed the Speed Racer: The Next Generation movie and now I'm offering you a chance to win a free copy of the DVD! As a matter of fact, I have two copies to give away, so you will have an even better chance at winning.
Contest Rules:

- Contest ends on Tuesday, May 6.
- Two winners will be randomly chosen and announced on Friday, May 9.

My dearest friend is also named Tracey, and we were at the beach one time in high school talking to boys we certainly should not have been speaking to. To tell us apart, one of the boys asked if either of us had ever seen Speed Racer. I said yes, and have been Trixie ever since.

Speed Racer has a timeless good vs evil storyline that transcends generations. The Mach V is still every kids dream car.
As a dad of two boys, there are three timeless sound effects I've made it my life duty to pass on to my young Padawons.
The first is the mandatory "pew pew pew" when playing Star Wars, shooting stormtroopers with laser weapons made out of fallen sticks.
The second is shouting "Funuh nuh nuh nuh nuh" when jumping over things like the Bionic Man.
And of course the third is to properly pronounce the infamous Mach V "chew chew chew" sound when jumping Matchbox and Tonka vehicles over every concieveable item in the house. (As a kid that sound becomes mandatory once the art of jumping a bike over a curb becomes physically possible)
Years ago, during the time when Speed Racer was just a memory and before the DVD's were released, I saw a black Impala SS with blacked out windows and the vanity plate "Racer X" roaming the local highways. I've always owned black cars, and to this day every time my plates are up for renewal I check to see if that plate is available.
It never is.
Speed Racer TNG is sure to be a hit.

Before all this anime craze, there was the original Speed Racer. I love the song, "Go speed racer, go speed racer. Go speed racer, GO!" I love their cute voices

THE SONG! I always loved the song. The cartoon wasn't really my style as a kid but I still was drawn to it because of that silly music.

Hello, I like the fact that it is an updated version of the old "Speed Racer" but that it still mimics the old version. My husband used to watch this show as a child. He loved it. Still does. Please enter me in your drawing. Many thanks, Cindi

I had not heard of Speed Racer before seeing 1998's "Free Enterprise." It was only recently when I heard about the movie that I finally watched some of the episodes. It's cool that they're doing The Next Generation. I like the sound of "dramatic reveals and unfolding story arcs", but there also shocking story twists and endless pillow talk? That's just a little Simpsons reference there for you. Couldn't resist.

I'm anxious to see if Trixie shows up in this movie, all grown up. I was in love with Trixie when I was a young lad.

I thought it was cool that the Mach 5 had all those secret gadgets. If I had something like that on my car every jerk who didn't use their turn signal or not stopping at a stop sign would end up in a tree or sawed into two. I loved Speed Racer so count me in!

Ah ya, Trixie was a fav of mine to as a kid. I'd like to be added to to see if she made it into this generations show.

I thought Racer X was awesome. He was like a anti-hero which was rare for that time in cartoons. I'd like to see what Racer X is up to in the new show so sign me up.

I absolutely love speed racer because my now 13 year old son, Ciaran loves it! I'm not even sure how we discovered it but we found ourselves watching several episodes when he was just a toddler and he was hooked! We hunted down toy cars and figures on eBay and some of our sweetest memories of Ciri's little boy days are of watching the cartoons and playing with the little matchbox mach 5!
We all still love everything Speed Racer and the whole family still watches the dvds we have together and we're super-excited about the movie, I hope he never outgrows it!

I have read your blogs several times. I would not say I am a regular but I will be on more now that I learned I work with your sis! Glenda is a "good" person and cool to work with. I have been a fan of "old school" shows including Speed Racer and Wizard of OZ! Glenda don't stuff me in the trunk! The monky made me do it!
