Our First Zombie Walk
Yesterday, Brian and I took the kids to see our first zombie walk. If you aren't familiar with this phenomenon, a zombie walk is when a large group of people walk down a street as a mob of Romero-esque zombies. They wear zombie make-up, tattered clothes, etc. Good times. We would have participated, but there is no way that Lois and Jason would let us apply make-up to their faces. Also, I was concerned that they might get a bit nervous amongst the undead.
As it turns out, they had a blast and I'm definitely getting the whole family into character next time!
This particular zombie walk took place in Grapevine, Texas and it helped kick off this year's Texas Frightmare Weekend. If you live in the area, this horror convention will be going strong all weekend. The entire cast of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead will be there.
Of course, the man himself is also there - Mr. George A. Romero.
We went to the zombie rendezvous point before the walk began and took some great pics. I have to say, everyone there was extremely friendly. This may seem like a strange event to deem "family friendly," but it's no different than what you might see on the street while trick-or-treating. There were kids of all ages having a lot of fun.
Here are a few shots of the maddening crowd before the walk began. The first one is two cute zombie girls "chasing" Brian. He seems to be rejoicing, not screaming!

I think this guy had the coolest make-up on:

Insert political joke here:

Now this is geek parenting at its finest:

Punk is not dead. It's undead:

These were the "zombie hunters" that brought up the rear of the zombie walk.

Malcom McDowell is a guest at the horror convention, so this guy dressed as Caligula. Brian had to shout, "Hey, Caligula!" across a parking lot to get his attention, which was probably more surreal to me than seeing 100+ zombies in one place:

And finally, here is a video of the actual walk. Sorry my hand is shaking so much. When it dips below 70 degrees in Texas, we consider it an Arctic front. The shaky-cam makes it feel like the Cloverfield monster is about to spring forth!
It was hilarious to see the soccer moms drive by and react. They obviously had no idea what was going on. If you listen closely, you'll hear a collective groaning from the crowd. Some people were saying, "Brains..." and I heard at least one guy say "Chick-Fil-A..." If you have a chance to attend a zombie walk in the future, I highly recommend it.

Sadly our kids are totally flipped out by all things creepy and would be screaming bloody murder at such a sight. Sigh. I will have to be content with the other geeky stuff--like my kids are now using Ubuntu flavored Linux and learning Kturtle/LOGO.

Well, they'll make a lot more money at that than zombie walkin', LOL.
Mine are so young, they didn't even notice. Though, the mood was also very upbeat. Everyone was laughing and playing with the kids.
Like I said, it wasn't any different than stuff you'd see while trick-or-treating.

I am living in the wrong place. I do not know anyone who does this, or anywhere it is done!

I just started hearing about them this past year. As far as I know, it's a fairly recent trend. Who knows, there may be a zombie walk coming to a town near you!

Wow! That totally rocks. I think my kids would freak out....but if they actually did something this cool in our area, we'd get a sitter and go participate. Fun!

I love the picture of Brian "running away" from the zombies! I can *maybe* believe that he'd run if he had Lois with him but NOT if he were alone! LOL! Looks like a great time was had by all.

we did a thing like this on halloween last year at the University of Florida. we went moaning "braiiiins" through the no-talking areas of the libraries and up and down all of campus. it was a blast.

This looks like it was too much fun. We had a come as your favorite undead dude party back in the 90's. We even sacrificed Kenny inside of a giant flaming circle. I'll have to get the other UHNBC folks together to do one of these.

It is precisely a unique and brilliant “walk”. I never thought there’s a thing as that. It was so cool. Hopefully you’re kids won’t get into trauma because of their fear. Lol

Hey you must enjoyed there a lot. The location seems to be very excited and those moment were so catchy and full of enthusiasm, as shown in the pictures above.
Looking nice to see the baby sitting in the chair and the person tries to make her scare..lol
