Vintage Geek Parenting... From Japan
Here is some vintage children's programming at its finest, compliments of our friends in Japan. Entitled "Johnny Sokko And His Flying Rocket," I think you'll agree that this is 10 times better than any episode of "Power Rangers." Enjoy:
I can vaguely remember something like this being played on a UHF station on Saturday afternoons when I was a kid. You remember, after the clock struck noon and "Soul Train" brought your network cartoons to a screeching halt? That's when the bizarre, Japanese fun began! Lois watched this with me and kept raising her arms up like the flying rocket. It makes a mother proud, you know. *sniff*
Nothing beats the amusing insanity of Japanese game shows, though. Check out my other pet project, Game Shows In Japan.

Oh. My. Goodness. I remember this. My son saw me watching and responded exactly the eway I did as a kid--he ran around the house shooting rockets from his fingers.

Oh...so you wanna go there, eh, Amy? Allright, I'll see your "Johnny Sokko" and raise you a "Spectreman".

LOL! That's amazing, but the Spectreman theme song doesn't compare to the swingin' sound of Ultraman:

I'll admit, the Ultraman song is great, but for sheer "That's cool" enjoyment, you need a giant golden daddy robot from space that lives in a volcano and wears quite possibly the worst wig in history.
That's right, you need Space Giants!

(I'm trying to find a video that explains this one a bit better...it was actually three giant robots; a mom, a dad and a son that kept getting into trouble. And yes, they were transformers before Transformers were cool.
Back to you!

Wow, I think we've exhausted those kaiju TV shows, haven't we?
Here's my favorite song from a Japanese film:

OMG!! Space Giants!! I have been trying to remember what that thing was called for the longest time. I remember that one coming on in the morning when nothing else was on- it may have been Sunday.
That's too funny about the Soul Train. As soon as you saw that train chugging in, you knew Saturday morning was over. It's too sad that there's no longer a Saturday morning cartoon marathon. Or maybe there is, but with five cartoon channels I doubt anyone is interested.
